At The Nue Co., we believe that humans need a combination of the following tools to truly thrive: a healthy body, a healthy planet, education, community, a voice, a community and clean water. Yet according to the World Health Organisation, 785 million people in the world live without clean water—that’s ten times the population of the United States.

Contaminated water and poor sanitation are linked to transmission of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A, typhoid and polio. It’s estimated that some 829,000 people die each year from diarrhoea as a result of unsafe drinking-water, sanitation, and hand hygiene, despite it being largely preventable with access to clean water and basic sanitation. Switching from an unimproved source to effective household water treatment (like boiling water or home filtration units) can reduce the risk of diarrheal disease by as much as 45%, saving around 16,000 lives a week.

Our partnership with charity: water helps to give people in developing countries the ultimate tool to thrive—clean water. This trickles through every aspect of life, improving health, increasing access to food, growing local economies, and helping children spend more time in school. Here’s how charity: water has helped to equip 11 million people in 28 countries so far with the tools to thrive:

A healthy body
Globally, 50 million children are stunted due to malnutrition. This leads to long-term physical and cognitive damage. Improved sanitation can reduce the chances of stunting by 27%, and prevent the deaths of 800 children under the age of five every single day.

A healthy planet
Every country has unique needs and conditions, just like we as people do. Existing water sources, terrain and population need to be considered for which water solution will best serve each individual community. This means a variety of different technologies—BioSand filters, rainwater catchments, drilled wells, and more—are implemented worldwide.

Education
Less time collecting water means more time in class for education. Clean water and proper toilets at school means teenage girls don’t have to stay home for a week out of every month. charity: water’s work also doesn’t end when a water point is constructed; they train local community members on the importance of sanitation and hygiene, given that health only gets better when all of these factors improve.

A voice
Women are responsible for 72% of the water collected in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Africa alone, women spend 40 billion hours a year walking for water. When a community gets water, women and girls can take more control of their lives. They are able to start businesses, improve their homes, and take charge of their own futures.

Community
charity: water’s current focus is in Africa and Asia: “We’ve learned that when our work is concentrated, we can reach more people with greater efficiency. And when we know an area well, we make better long-term investments, promote greater coverage, and provide more value to the community as a whole.”
